AI Agent

In Malay: Agen AI

An AI agent is an AI system that does more than just reply in a chat box: it can plan a sequence of steps and take action using outside tools to complete a goal. With your permission, an agent can browse websites, read and edit local files, update spreadsheets, or run code — checking its own work along the way until the job is done.

Example: You say "find 5 box suppliers in Selangor and put them in a table", and the agent searches, reads the websites and builds the table.

How an AI agent differs from a regular chatbot

The easiest way to understand an AI agent is to compare it with a standard chat session. A regular chatbot acts like an advisor across the table: you ask a question, it gives you a written reply, and you still have to copy, paste, and carry out the actual work yourself.

An AI agent, by contrast, is given both a goal and access to tools. If you ask an agent to "Go through the 50 receipt files in this folder and build an expense spreadsheet", it does not just tell you how to do it. Instead, it:

  • Opens the folder and inspects each file one by one.
  • Extracts the date, merchant name, and total from every receipt.
  • Checks whether any numbers look unreadable or missing.
  • Writes a finished spreadsheet file ready for your review.

How an AI agent works behind the scenes

Every useful AI agent combines three core pieces so it can work through multi-step tasks reliably:

  • A reasoning brain (LLM): The language model that understands your goal, breaks a big job into smaller steps, and decides what to do next.
  • Outside tools (Tool Use and MCP): Safe connections to real software — such as a web browser, a local project folder, a calendar, or a video processor.
  • A feedback loop: After taking one action, the agent reads the result. If a command fails or returns an error, it can adjust its plan and try again.

Practical ways people in Malaysia use AI agents

Interest in AI agents has grown quickly in Malaysia because they let non-programmers handle technical or repetitive work without writing code by hand:

  • PC file and project workflows: Tools like Claude Code let you type plain Malay or English instructions to organise folders, build websites, or batch-process videos on your computer.
  • Deep web research: Research agents can visit dozens of public pages to compare local suppliers or summarise complex topics into a structured brief with source links.
  • Business operations: Combined with workflow automation, an agent can read incoming enquiries, check a product sheet, and draft a reply waiting for human approval.

Safety rules when working with AI agents

Because an AI agent can take real actions — editing files, running scripts, or sending messages — a mistake or hallucination carries more risk than a wrong answer in a chat window.

I always follow a human-in-the-loop rule when using agents: restrict the agent to a dedicated project folder, keep manual approval turned on so it asks before deleting files or running system commands, and never let an agent send external emails or touch live company data without a human clicking yes first.

Common questions

Why do Malaysians search for both 'ejen AI' and 'agen AI'?

Both terms mean AI Agent in Bahasa Melayu. 'Ejen' is the standard dictionary spelling in Malaysia, while 'agen' is a common everyday spelling borrowed directly from English.

Do I need to know how to code to use an AI agent?

No. Many modern agents accept plain Malay or English instructions, allowing you to describe the outcome you want while you review and approve each action the agent proposes.

How is an AI agent different from traditional automation?

Traditional automation follows rigid 'if this, then that' rules and breaks whenever an input looks slightly different. An AI agent can read messy text, decide which tool fits the situation, and adapt its steps to reach the goal.
