How to Use ChatGPT From Zero (A Guide for Malaysians)

A step-by-step guide for anyone just starting with ChatGPT: sign up, understand the screen, write your first instruction, and 7 everyday uses that pay off right away.

Lots of Malaysians have heard about ChatGPT, but when they open it, they stare at that empty screen and don't know what to type. This article is for you if you're truly starting from zero. You don't need to be technical, and you don't need to pay for anything yet.

What is ChatGPT, really?

ChatGPT is a program you can chat with, just like WhatsApp: you type, it replies. The difference is that it has "read" a large part of the internet, so it can write, explain, summarize, translate and help you think.

One important thing: it is not Google. Google finds pages that already exist. ChatGPT creates new answers based on patterns it has learned. That's why it can write a formal letter for you in 10 seconds, but it's also why it sometimes makes up facts with total confidence (this is called hallucination).

Step 1: Sign up

  1. Go to chatgpt.com (or download the ChatGPT app from the App Store / Play Store, and make sure the developer is OpenAI).
  2. Tap Sign up, and register with your email or Google account.
  3. The free version is enough to start. Don't pay for anything yet. You'll know when you need the paid version (usually when you keep hitting the usage limit).

Step 2: Understand the screen

Once you're in, only three things matter:

  • The text box at the bottom: this is where you write your instructions (called a prompt).
  • The conversation list on the left: for every new topic, start a new conversation. Don't mix everything into one chat.
  • The model picker at the top: leave it on the default for now. I'll talk about model choices in another article.

Step 3: Your first instruction

Type this and press Enter:

I've just started using ChatGPT. Explain 5 things you can help me do in my daily life as a Malaysian. Answer in casual English.

Notice two things: I gave context (just starting, Malaysian) and a format (5 things, casual English). This is the basic secret: the more clearly you say what you want, the better its answer.

Tip: You can write in Bahasa Melayu, English, or a mix. It understands them all. If its answer comes out in English, just add "answer in Bahasa Melayu".

Step 4: Continue the conversation, don't start over

This is the most common beginner mistake. If the first answer isn't right, don't open a new chat and type it all again. Just reply:

  • "Make it shorter."
  • "Make the tone more formal, this is for my boss."
  • "Give me 3 other versions."
  • "Number 2 is good, expand on it."

ChatGPT remembers what you said earlier in the same conversation. Think of it as an assistant whose work you can polish again and again.

7 everyday uses that pay off right away

1. Write messages that are hard to write

Please write a polite WhatsApp message to my landlord, asking to pay the rent 5 days late because my salary came in late. Respectful tone, not too long.

2. Translate with the right tone

Translate this email into professional business English: [paste your email]

3. Summarize long documents

Summarize this document in 5 main points, and list any deadlines or actions I need to take: [paste text]

4. Plan menus / budgets / schedules

Make a 5-day dinner menu for a family of 4, budget RM150, with ingredients that are easy to find in Malaysian supermarkets. Include a shopping list.

5. Understand things you don't understand

Explain what EPF Account 3 is like I'm a 15-year-old. Then explain it again like I'm an adult who needs to make a decision.

6. Prepare for a job interview

I have an interview for a marketing executive role at an FMCG company. Ask me 5 interview questions one at a time, wait for my answer, and give me feedback after each one.

7. Content ideas for a small business

I sell kuih raya (Hari Raya cookies) online in Johor Bahru. Give me 10 short TikTok video ideas I can make with just my phone.

3 things you MUST know

1. Check important facts. Numbers, laws, prices, people's names, dates: check them yourself before you use them. ChatGPT can be wrong with full confidence.

2. Don't paste private information. IC numbers (Malaysian identity card), passwords, bank details, customer data: don't put them in. Assume anything you type could be read by someone else.

3. Its output is a draft, not a finished product. Read it, change it, add your own voice. People can tell when something is 100% AI with no human touch.

Next steps

Once you're comfortable chatting, the next skill is writing instructions properly. That's what separates an "okay" answer from one that makes you feel like you have a personal assistant. Read How to Write Prompts the Right Way.
