Prompt

A prompt is the instruction, question, or input you give an AI to tell it what you want it to do. Whether you are chatting with ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, or generating a clip in Seedance, the quality of the output depends directly on how clear and specific your prompt is.

Example: "Write a caption" is a weak prompt. "Write 3 short, funny TikTok captions for a video of a sleeping cat, aimed at Malaysian teenagers" is a strong prompt.

Why a clear prompt matters so much

Many people open ChatGPT for the first time, type three words like "write an email", and feel disappointed when the reply sounds stiff and generic. The problem is rarely the model itself — it is simply that the AI cannot read your mind.

Think of AI as a capable new intern who knows nothing about your situation yet. If you only say "write a letter", it has to guess who the reader is, what you are asking for, and what tone fits best. Once you include that context inside your prompt, the reply goes from a vague template to something you can actually use.

The 4 building blocks of a strong prompt

For everyday work, you do not need complicated secret formulas. Just make sure your prompt covers four practical details before you hit send:

  • Role (Who): Tell the AI what perspective to take, such as a primary school teacher, an HR manager, or a copywriter.
  • Context (Situation): Explain who the audience is and the real-world background in Malaysia.
  • Task (What): State the exact job you want done — a summary, a comparison, a draft reply, or a checklist.
  • Format and constraints (How it looks): Specify the layout you want, such as a table, bullet points, word limit, or tone of voice.

Weak prompt vs strong prompt: a real comparison

Compare how these two instructions shape the answer for the exact same need:

  • Weak prompt: "Give me dinner ideas." (The reply will be overly broad and often suggests ingredients you do not have in your kitchen.)
  • Strong prompt: "I get home from work at 7pm and need quick weeknight dinners for a family of four in Malaysia. Suggest 5 simple halal dishes I can cook in under 25 minutes using basic ingredients like chicken, eggs, or anchovies. Put the answer in a table with Dish Name, Key Ingredients, and 3 Short Steps."

By adding the time limit, local ingredients, and table format, you save yourself three rounds of follow-up edits.

How text prompts differ from image and video prompts

Prompts for text tools like ChatGPT or Claude focus on logic, background facts, and structure. When you write a prompt for generative image or generative video tools like Higgsfield, Seedance, or Kling, the model needs visual direction instead of abstract explanations.

A good visual prompt describes what the camera actually sees: the subject, their clothing and action, the setting, the lighting, and how the camera moves. I always suggest starting with one clear sentence, checking the first result, and adjusting one detail at a time.

Common questions

Do I have to write prompts in English?

For text tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, writing your prompt in Bahasa Melayu works very well. Some image and video generators still respond more accurately to English camera and lighting terms, so you can ask a text AI to translate your Malay description into a visual prompt first.

How long should a good prompt be?

There is no magic word count — clarity beats length every time. Three to five clear sentences that state the role, context, task, and output format are plenty for most daily tasks.

Why does the same prompt give a slightly different answer each time?

Generative AI models include a small amount of randomness by design so their writing feels natural rather than robotic. If you want tighter consistency, specify an exact structure or include a sample output inside your prompt.
